Please find below the details of our learning for Spring 1:

Come and See

This half term, our topics are Mission and Memorial Sacrifice. In our Mission topic, we will explore inspirational leaders and how we can continue Jesus’ mission and spread the Good News. We will understand the word diocese and the role of a bishop. For our other topic, we will learn about Passover and the Last Supper. We will understand the Eucharist and sacrifice (the sacrifice of Jesus and everyday sacrifices).

Y5 will explore fractions, decimals and percentages building on their skills from previous years. They will learn how to add, subtract and multiply fractions of the same and different denominators and further their understanding of equivalent fractions. Y5 will learn how to write decimals and percentages as fractions and vice versa. There will also be daily basic skills sessions for Y5 to develop their maths skills such as learning their times tables.

This half term, we will continue to build our skills from last term and will also look at new grammar focuses. We will write a ‘tale of quest’ and an explanation text for our Talk 4 Writing novel; ‘Percy Jackson’ by Rick Riordan, which is linked to our next History topic – Ancient Greece. We will also be consolidating our understanding and knowledge of other areas of grammar and the related terminology. A list of specific spellings, which we will be concentrating on each week, will be sent home for your child to learn as well as being updated weekly on Spelling Shed.

Y5 will be looking at ‘Properties and changes of materials’. For this unit, we will learn about grouping materials, solubility, burning and reversible and irreversible changes. We will conduct numerous scientific investigations to support our learning and to develop our working scientifically skills.

This term, we will be focusing on Geography and looking at Natural Disasters. We will focus on earthquakes and tsunamis and learn why and how these occur and the correct terminology to use.

Y5 will be exploring the artwork of Katsushika Hokusai focusing on his painting ‘The Great Wave’ for our Art lessons, helping us to develop our painting skills

For DT, Y5 will be designing and building waterproof structures linking to our Natural Disasters Geography topic.

This half term we will be exploring 2D and 3D worlds using design tools on iPads. We will be looking at both design and environmental features to design a home for a famous person.

Our PE this term will be on Wednesday’s

Y5’s PE lessons this half term will be Tennis. Children MUST have full PE kits every week for these sessions; white T-Shirt, black shorts/leggings and black trainers/pumps.

Children will also be regularly working on improving their stamina by walking/ jogging/ running a ‘Daily Mile’.

Homework will be set on a Friday to be returned the following Friday. This will sometimes be in their homework books and sometimes set online on Spelling and Maths Shed and TT RockstarsWhen your child doesn’t complete homework, there will be an expectation that they finish it during break/ lunchtimes. It is essential that we work together to ensure that homework is completed and returned. Reading daily for at least 15 minutes is also an expectation as well as bringing their reading books into school each day. It is vital that the children are encouraged to do this to achieve the high expectations set for the end of Key Stage 2.

Should you ever wish to discuss anything about your child, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Year 5 team in order to arrange an appointment. We will be on the exit door every evening or, you can contact the office if you wish to request an appointment.

We look forward to working with your children this year!
