We hope that during the year you will enjoy finding out about all the wonderful things we will be learning in our lessons. To keep up to date with what is happening inside our classroom follow us in twitter @HolyFamilyL8_5L

Please find below the details of our learning for Spring 2:

Come and See

This half term, our topics are Memorial Sacrifice and Giving. For our Memorial Sacrifice topic, we will learn about Passover and the Last Supper. We will understand the Eucharist and sacrifice – the sacrifice of Jesus and everyday sacrifices. For our other topic, we will explore the period of Lent and Easter. We will understand that this time period is all about giving.

Y5 will explore fractions, building on their skills from previous years. They will learn how to add, subtract and multiply fractions of the same and different denominators and further their understanding of equivalent fractions. Y5 will learn how to write decimals and percentages as fractions and vice versa. There will also be daily basic skills sessions for Y5 to develop their maths skills such as learning their times tables.

This half term, we will continue to build our skills from last term and will also look at new grammar focuses. We will write an explanation text and a persuasive leaflet for our Talk 4 Writing novel; ‘Percy Jackson’ by Rick Riordan, which is linked to our History topic – Ancient Greece. We will also be consolidating our understanding and knowledge of other areas of grammar and the related terminology. A list of specific spellings, which we will be concentrating on each week, will be sent home for your child to learn as well as being updated weekly on Spelling Shed.

Y5 will be looking at ‘Forces’. For this unit, we will learn about gravity, air resistance, water resistance, friction and leavers, gears and pulleys. We will conduct numerous scientific investigations to support our learning and to develop our working scientifically skills.

This term, we will be focusing on History and looking at Ancient Greece. We will learn about Ancient Greek life, achievements and their influence on the western world as well as exploring Greek gods and goddesses.

Y5 will be creating moving posters using different techniques such as flaps, concertina folds, and slides about Greek gods and goddesses. We will also be exploring food technology looking at food that comes from the Mediterranean.

This half term we will be looking at e-Safety and how to search appropriately online. We will also This learn how to create a movie using images. We will develop a movie storyboard reel, create 3D versions of the reel and then create a movie using images of our designs.

Our PE this term will be on Wednesday’s

Y5’s PE lessons this half term will focus on dance. Children MUST have full PE kits every week for these sessions; white T-Shirt, black shorts and black trainers/pumps.

Children will also be regularly working on improving their stamina by walking/ jogging/ running a ‘Daily Mile’.

Homework will be set on a Friday to be returned the following Friday. This will be completed in their homework books or online on Teams. There will also be Spelling and Maths Shed and TT Rockstar activities. When your child doesn’t complete homework, there will be an expectation that they finish it during break/ lunchtimes. It is essential that we work together to ensure that homework is completed and returned. Reading daily for at least 15 minutes is also an expectation as well as bringing their reading books into school each week. It is vital that the children are encouraged to do this to achieve the high expectations set for the end of Key Stage 2.

Should you ever wish to discuss anything about your child, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Year 5 team in order to arrange an appointment. We will be on the exit door every evening or, you can contact the office if you wish to request an appointment.

We look forward to working with your children this year!
