‘Ocean Commotion’

Welcome to Year 2

Welcome to Year 2 at Holy Family with Miss Holme and Mrs Lynch.

We hope that during the year you will enjoy finding out about all the wonderful things we will be learning about in our lessons. To keep up to date with what is happening inside our classroom follow us on twitter @HolyFamilyL8_2H

This half term we will be covering:

Our topic this half term will be ‘Ocean Commotion’. During this topic in Geography we will be locating and naming the world’s oceans including the UK’s oceans. We will also be finding out about British coastlines and use appropriate vocabulary when discussing human and physical features.

English

This half term we will be using Talk for writing to write our own set of instructions based on ‘How to trap a Dragon’.

We will also be reading ‘The Rainbow Fish’. From this we will unpick the vocabulary from the text, looking at how the author uses language to describe the setting as well as the characters in the story.

Through our writing we will be looking at making appropriate additions, revisions and corrections when proofreading and editing, with some prompting and discussion with our teacher.

We will continue to spell most common exception words correctly in our writing, including high frequency homophones their/they’re/there, to/two/too as well as other homophones e.g. blew, blue.

We will continue to have daily phonic or spelling lessons which are carried out through Read Write Inc. We will also have daily Guided Reading sessions to look at fluency, comprehension and inference skills.

Every Monday from their RWInc lessons your child will get spellings. They will need to learn their spellings for a test every Friday

Maths

This half term we will look at time during which we will compare and sequence intervals of time, as well as telling and writing the time to five minutes.

We will then move onto identify and describe the properties of 2D and 3-D shapes, including the number of sides, edges, vertices and faces. We will the identify 2-D shapes on the surface of 3-D shapes, (for example, a circle on a cylinder and a triangle on a pyramid).

We will conclude with interpreting and constructing simple pictograms, tally charts, block diagrams and simple tables.

Come and See

Our first Come and See topic is ‘Spread the Word.’ In this topic we will explore the idea of passing on messages. we will listen to the story of the Ascension and will link this to Pentecost being a time to spread the Good News.

Our next topic will be ‘Rules.’ We will explore how rules can help at home and in school. From this we will look briefly at the sacrament of Reconciliation and will recognise how rules can help us in the wider Christian community.

Get Set for Life

In this theme, children will look at some of the feelings that are associated with close relationships, particularly in the family and with friends. Children will think about feelings of hurt, in themselves and others, and how to manage these feelings. As a follow-up to the assembly the children will consider the people who are important to them. They will be given the opportunity to use a story about a cat leaving home to explore the uncomfortable feelings associated with being left and experiencing a loss. They will explore how sometimes those whom we love and who love us leave us.

Science

In Science this half term we will be observing and describing how seeds and bulbs grow into mature plants. We will also find out and describe how plants need water, light and a suitable temperature to grow and stay healthy.

Art

In Art we will be finding out about Anthony Gormley’s ‘Another Place’ Clay models. We will then make drawings and models of people showing awareness of natural and manmade forms and will shape and form from direct observation. When doing this we will use a range of tools for shaping and mark-making. We will conclude by evaluating our own work and that of other sculptors.

P.E.

Our P.E. this term will be on Tuesday

On this day children must come to school dressed in their P.E. kits or tracksuit.

Homework

This is given out every Thursday and is due back the following week. There will be a Maths and an English focus.

Children also have access to Spelling Shed, Reading plus and Times Tables Rockstars, which they need to go onto regularly.

Every Monday from their RWI lessons your child will get spellings based on the sounds they are being taught that week. They will need to practice these at home for a test every Friday morning.

Every Thursday their home reading book must be returned to school so it can be exchanged for another.

Children are also encouraged to take a read for pleasure book home to share with members of their family.
